How to Troubleshoot Your Air Conditioning System

If you are dealing with issues with your AC unit, there are certain steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem and see if you can fix it or if you will have to enlist the help of a professional HVAC contractor to do the work for you. Below are some common troubleshoot steps to take first.

Breaker

Find the breaker that your system is powered by. Switch it in the OFF position and then back into the ON position to reset it. When you reset the breaker it may be just what you need to remedy the AC systems malfunction since in a lot of cases the breaker tends to trigger itself into the OFF position. It is important to reset the breaker as your first step since this is the easiest and most common trigger of AC unit problems. Also, this will avoid you having to go out and hire a professional HVAC technician to come in and check your unit out. If after you reset the breaker and it does not remedy the problem or if it sparks when you do so, this can indicate a more serious problem that will indeed need the attention of a licensed HVAC technician.

Evaporator Coil

If your air conditioning system constantly cycles on and off, this could have something to do with the evaporator coil. Perhaps something is blocking the coil. It could also be the fan of the system being blocked by something. Be sure to turn off your system before you check for any debris or dirt blockage.

Leaking

A leakage problem typically happens with a clogged drain. Cleaning it regularly or at minimum, once a month, can help to prevent future leaking. You can clean it by combining a water and vinegar mixture and pouring it from the inside.

Thermostat

Another first thing to do is to check the thermostat. The thermostat controls your unit with several knobs, switches and buttons. Often these can be switched to different settings without you knowing it and just need a quick moving back. Make sure the setting on it is on or if you have it on auto, make certain it is working the way you want it on this setting.

Condenser

If the condenser of your system is turning on and off repeatedly, you can start by it. Eliminate any dirt and debris and make sure there is plenty of room around it for air flow. Then, simply spray the unit with a hose to eliminate smaller debris or dirt. One very important thing to not do when troubleshooting your unit is to go above the skills you know. There are things you can do by yourself if you are a handy person. A lot of problems can be fixed by homeowners alone. However, if it is a more serious problem, it is important to contact a professional to come in and check it out. This will save you from headaches down the road.
