Factors That Affect the Service Life of a Furnace

A furnace can last 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance, but there are certain things that can extend or shorten the lifespan of your HVAC equipment. HVAC Construction, one of the leading HVAC contractors in the area, discusses more below.

The size of the unit. When purchasing a new furnace for your home, see to it that it’s appropriately sized for your house. Otherwise, issues could develop that affect the way it operates and compromise your comfort needs. If it’s too small for the space, it will have to work twice as hard to ensure indoor comfort. If it’s too big, on the other hand, it will experience short cycling, where the unit turns on and off too quickly. Both instances will lead to early wear and tear on the unit, which will eventually result in the need for untimely repairs.

Installation. Furnace installation can also have an impact on the unit’s long-term performance and efficiency. Poorly-designed and -sealed ductwork affects airflow, preventing the equal distribution of conditioned air around your home. A furnace may also provide inconsistent levels of comfort due to improperly-installed fuel lines. Working with an experienced, certified HVAC contractor is imperative in ensuring that your unit’s warranty stays intact and problems associated with faulty installation are avoided.

Temperature settings. Ensuring the efficiency and performance of your furnace starts with setting the right temperature on the thermostat. For the colder months, the optimal range is between 60°F and 80°F. Aim for 68°F if someone is at home during the day. Set temperatures between 66°F and 62°F when everyone is away or you’re going to sleep at night. Also, invest in a programmable thermostat so you can achieve savings as you use your furnace for comfort during the colder months of fall and winter.
